For my Bachelor's thesis, I performed research on how the current Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) websites are serving Indonesian millennials. The thesis (which became a published research paper), titled 'Exploring User Experience of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs): A Case Study of Millennial Learners in Jakarta, Indonesia', focused on Coursera and Udemy as the subjects whose UX were to be further reviewed.
The method I used in analysing Coursera and Udemy's user experience was the UX Honeycomb by Peter Morville.
To summarise, the research found that:
Coursera’s sophisticated design is intimidating to some beginners.
Respondents liked the sleek design of Coursera and Udemy, but would appreciate a splash of color to make the learning process less dull.
Gamification is a great way to motivate users to complete their courses.
With the insights I collected, I decided to create a visualisation of what respondents’ ideal MOOC platform would look like, including design parities for desktop and app formats:
On mobile, the white background and simple colour schemes create a sophisticated yet fun harmony.
The overall design is made consistent across both the mobile and desktop platforms. In addition, users can quickly continue their ongoing courses and view their course activity on the desktop version’s Dashboard page.
